PM's support in Bangkok drops after Dec 31 bombs: Abac poll

Public support for Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont has plummeted among Bangkokians in the aftermath of the fatal New Year's Eve bombings, according to a poll released on Friday.
Only 48.5 per cent of the 1,600 respondents said they supported Surayud, down from 90 per cent when he took office in October, the Abac poll from Assumption University said. The survey was conducted on January 3 and 4 in Bangkok. Series of coordinated bombs killed three and wounded 42 in Bangkok on New Year's Eve. The poll also appeared to show weakening support for the military, whose takeover on September 19 had been largely embraced by residents of the capital. Sixty-three per cent of the respondents said they were confident in police providing security against future attacks, while 53 per cent were confident in the military and 11 per cent were confident in Surayud's government. Forty-six per cent of respondents said they believed the attack was the work of politicians who lost vested interests after the coup. However nearly 39 per cent were undecided about the motivation behind the bombings, while 15 per cent said they did not believe the attacks were politically motivated, the poll said.
