SMS surge includes warnings

Short message service (SMS) over the New Year surged significantly from a year ago in all major cellular networks. Largest operator Advanced Info Service (AIS) said yesterday that 33 million SMS text messages were sent via its network on December 31 and January 1, up from 29 million last year.

About 600,000 multimedia messages were sent from its network, compared with 410,000 last year. AIS has about 18 million subscribers.

Second-largest operator Total Access Communication (DTAC) reported that 29 million SMS were sent from its network on December 31 and January 1, up from 21 million last year. Multimedia messages surged to 500,000 from 360,000. The company has about 11.5 million subscribers.

The head of DTAC's value-added service unit, Pakorn Panachet, said 11 million SMS were sent on December 31 and 18 million on January 1. Usually 3.5 million SMS are sent per day but phone users are much more familiar with sending messages, particularly on festive occasions.

True Move, with almost 6 million subscribers, recorded SMS sending of 12.8 million during the two days of New Year, up from 8.2 million last year.

Besides sending New Year greetings to friends, many mobile users said they also sent messages to warn friends about the blasts in Bangkok on December 31.
