Students can draft charter: PM

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont yesterday urged universities to encourage their students to participate in the constitution-drafting process by letting them create their own versions while the Constitution Drafting Assembly works on the official one.

Government spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp said yesterday that Surayud also asked a meeting of 30 university rectors for ideas about how to hold more student exchanges between the South and the rest of the country.

Surayud proposed that Prince of Songkla University coordinate with the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre and other agencies.

He said universities in other regions should open up more opportunities for students in the southern provinces to observe the lifestyles and thinking of students outside their region.

Rectors such as Suchada Kiranandana of Chulalongkorn, Surapol Nitikraipot of Thammasat and Pornchai Matangkasombat of Mahidol, as well as advisers to the prime minister and to the chairman of the Council for National Security, also attended the meeting.
