FILMREVIEWS
Snakes, demons and dancing penguins

Real life was far more interesting than the movies this year, at least for Thailand. Social unrest, a coup and a stock-market meltdown stunned the Kingdom. How could mere movies compete? Try, they did. Here's a wrap-up of the year's biggest winners and losers.

Best secret agent: Daniel Craig, without a doubt, was the year's most exciting new entry as the sixth James Bond in "Casino Royale".

Injecting raw energy and fresh humour into what was seen as an outdated series, he saved the game. Too bad Eva Green as his romantic lead failed to match his charisma.

Best animation: Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Hugh Jackman, Brittany Murphy, Nicole Kidman and Hugo Weaving all made the dancing-penguin movie "Happy Feet" a treat.

Close on its heels was Pixar's "Cars", another excellent effort.

Worst animation: "Monster House" was just one more reason why Steven Speilberg, its producer, should stop making films.

Best comedy: In "The Devil Wears Prada", Meryl Streep scored as a tough publisher and Anne Hathaway showed why she made "The Princess Diaries" so precious.

Best B-movie: Samuel L Jackson took on a cargo of deadly snakes that gangsters had stowed aboard a passenger jet to silence a murder witness. The result was the rattlingly good thriller "Snakes on a Plane".

Best remake of a TV series: Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell blasted their way out of tight spots in "Miami Vice", an artistic action flick by Michael Mann.

Best assassin: Jason Stratham lifted the hit-man character to a whole new level with "Crank", although our local censors failed to get the jokes.

Best look-alike: In "Superman Returns", Brandon Routh reminded everyone of Christopher Reeve, who immortalised the role.

Best adaptation: "The Departed", based on the Hong Kong movie "Infernal Affairs", scored thanks to Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Mark Wahlberg and director Martin Scorsese having the time of their lives.

Best disaster film: Trust Oliver Stone to deliver a captivating film about survivors and victims of a great tragedy, and he did, with "World Trade Center".

Worst remake: Even with a great cast - Liv Schreiber, Julia Stiles, Pete Postelthwaite, Michael Gambon, David Thewlis and Mia Farrow - the new "Omen" failed to match the original.

Most hyped flick: "The Da Vinci Code" was goosed along by controversy, including in Thailand, where censors were at one point prepared to cut the last 15 minutes to appease religious fanatics.

Most disappointing sequel: "Mission Impossible 3" was ruined when Tom Cruise's character married a doctor to please female viewers.

Weakest ending: Another great cast - Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johanssen and David Bowie - wasted as director Christopher Nolan failed to prove that magic is real in "The Prestige".

Shortest epic: The attention span of teens is low, but for an epic like "Eragon" to run under 110 minutes was ridiculous. "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings" ran almost three hours. Obviously being blond and cute, like star Edward Speleers, could only draw so many airheads before they dozed off.
