PM: Ex-govt's flaws tackled

The interim government has made satisfactory progress in addressing the four major flaws of the previous administration cited by the coup-makers when they seized power on September 19, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said yesterday.
Surayud was reporting on his administration's achievements over the past three months at the second "Prime Minister Meets the Press" session at Government House. The premier and his Cabinet were installed by the (Council for Democratic Reform), which has since renamed itself the Council for National Security (CNS). Surayud said yesterday that his government was encouraging reconciliation and unity within the country to rectify severe social division caused by his predecessor. As for the problem of corruption, the government has reviewed several questionable state projects and facilitated investigations by anti-graft agencies into the previous government, the premier said. Unlike the previous regime, his government had not interfered with independent organisations. Regarding allegations of lese majeste against Thaksin, permanent secretary for justice Jaran Pakdithanakul told reporters there were three cases against the former premier for comments made on different occasions. The first case has been withdrawn while investigations are underway in the other cases, he said. Surayud also answered questions from reporters on various matters at yesterday's session.
