Phra Phrome Jariyajarn dies from heart failure

The abbot of Wat Benchamabopitr, Phra Phrome Jariyajarn, died of heart failure on Sunday night. He was 86.
A member of the Sangha Supreme Council, the abbot was known for his writing skill and his writings based on Buddhist teaching. He authored many famous works, including a song sung in a Royal Barge procession and speeches made by Royal family members during Buddhist charity ceremonies. Phra Phrome Jariyajarn was the chief monk governing all temples located in Southern Bangkok. He was based mainly in his home province of Angthong after entering the monkhood and moved to Bangkok to study advanced Buddhist courses under a scholarship granted by Wat Benchama-bopitr. He completed a Class-7 level when he was 27. Born as Samut Ratchadawan in 1920, the abbot was ordained as a novice at age 12 and entered the monkhood at 20 in ceremonies incidentally presided over by the late Supreme Patriarch Somdej Phra Ariyawong Sakhottayan, who then held different lower ecclesiastical ranks. Phra Phrome Jariyajarn passed away at Chulalongkorn Hospital. His funeral service is being held at the Piya Maharaj Anusorn Pavilion at Wat Benchamabopitr. The bathing ritual will be held at 5pm today.
