In brief :Suksan Rice banned for three months

The Commerce Ministry yesterday suspended Suksan Rice from trading for three months after the company was found to have breached the Weight and Measurement Act of 1999.

The company had adjusted its weighing machine in a bid to cheat farmers. The machine overweighed by up to 117 kilograms per 10,000 tonnes of rice.

Commerce Minister Krirk-krai Jirapaet said the ministry would continuously send inspectors to monitor rice traders nationwide in a bid to protect farmers from unfair practices.

Best Western deal

Best Western International has signed an agreement with Phu Pha Nam Resort in Loei to manage and rebrand the 550-acre property as Best Western Phu Pha Nam Resort, effective next March.

The 71-room and -villa Best Western Phu Pha Nam Resort is tucked away on a forested mountainside overlooking a lush valley dotted with three lakes.

Its Swiss-chalet design incorporates teakwood to blend with the natural environment, while modern facilities have been adapted to offer leisure travellers an excellent base for outdoor activities, while providing business guests with a relaxing stay.

Situated 520 kilometres northeast of Bangkok, Loei shares its northern border with Laos and forms a natural boundary dividing Thailand into east and west.

Apartment projects

Malaysian company ARK Resources' subsidiary ARK Thai has accepted three letters of intent from Pastiya Thai for construction of 7,036 low-cost apartment units and associated external work for the Thai National Housing Authority (NHA) worth 248.15 million ringgit (Bt2.56 billion), reports the Bernama News Agency.

The project is part of the NHA's Baan Ua-Athorn project.

The entire project is due to be completed by the third quarter of 2008, said ARK Resources.

Initial investment of about 200 million ringgit will be funded from internally generated funds and bank loans.
