New Year's call traffic

Thailand's largest cellular operator, Advanced Info Service (AIS), is well prepared to handle the surge in message traffic over the New Year's holiday.
Weerawat Kiattipongthaworn, executive vice president for operations, said AIS had boosted network capacity this week, to be able to serve the sending of 10.8 million short-message service (SMS) messages per hour and 360,000 multimedia messaging system (MMS) messages per hour. That is up from 7.56 million SMS and 46,800 MMS messages last year. AIS has more than 18 million subscribers. It expects SMS traffic on December 31 and January 1 over its network to be 12.265 million and 20.767 million, respectively, compared with 10.7 million and 18.26 million last year. MMS sending over those two days is expected to total 210,448 and 264,611, respectively, compared with 185,568 and 233,327 last year. AIS will position additional engineers at cellular base stations over the New Year's holiday, Weerawat added. It will also provide a free charging service for mobile-phone batteries at key areas like Morchit and Ekamai bus stations.
