Gift baskets more popular this year

It's the festive season and the time of year for giving gifts, especially to mark the arrival of the New Year.
The basket gift has long proven to be a popular choice, and Bangkok people are expected to spend Bt800 million on them this New Year, according to Kasikorn Research Centre, the research arm of Kasikornbank.Earlier this month, the research centre questioned 765 people aged between 15 and 65 years, and it found that 42.6 per cent have set a higher budget for gift-giving during this festive season. Remarkably, custom gift baskets have gained greater popularity, with 40.1 per cent of respondents saying they will buy them, against 30.7 per cent last year. At the forefront of their concern when buying gift baskets are the types of products they contain. The most sought-after products are health goods, especially chicken essence and bird's nest soups. Moreover, consumers have become more price-conscious and consider value for money important. In most cases, respondents said they were concerned about the details of products, such as quality and expiry dates. The research centre said that to ensure the New Year brings happiness to all, both the public and private sectors should join to focus on the standards and quality of basket products. The government should take the lead in launching campaigns to encourage both producers and dealers to use only quality products. This will be a long-term plus for both producers and consumers, it said. However, consumers should thoroughly check the products in baskets and their expiry dates. The research centre said that with the prevailing mood of thriftiness among consumers and the "sufficiency economy" philosophy, gift baskets with a traditional Thai theme and packed with local fruits, desserts and handicrafts should be highly promoted. This will not only preserve local wisdom but also protect the national coffers.
