Insurance for fuel mishaps

All petrol filling stations, storage facilities and tank farms will require insurance that pays compensation for victims of accidents at these places.
The additional insurance coverage is required under a new Energy Business Department regulation issued last Tuesday. Department director-general Metta Banturngsuk said the regulation would be published in the Royal Gazette for 180 days before coming into effect by the middle of next year. There are about 8,000 filling stations, 203 tank farms and 4,000 storage facilities across the country. "This is a measure to provide more protection for people. Although these facilities have high safety standards, the insurance cover will ensure there is compensation for those involved in accidents," Metta explained. According to the regulation, each injury victim must be reimbursed for actual medical costs not exceeding Bt100,000. The same sum applies to permanent disability or death. If there is property damage compensation should be paid on actual losses not exceeding insurance-policy limits. Limits will be up to Bt25 million for tank farms, Bt2 million for filling stations and Bt1.5 million for petrol-storage facilities.
