Two shot dead, bomb set off

Two men were shot dead and a women injured in a bomb explosion yesterday in the latest violence in the Muslim majority South.
Rubber merchant Boonchob Chaichana, 55, was shot in a drive-by shooting while riding his motorbike to work. Two gunmen on a motorbike approached him from behind and opened fire - shooting three rounds into his back. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. In the same district, Sorn Pormkhaochung, 69, was shot in front of his house. Police said two gunmen rode a motorbike by Sorn's house and opened fire. He also died later at the hospital. Police believed Muslim radicals were behind both attacks. In the neighbouring province of Narathiwat, three bombs exploded almost simultaneously in three shops in Rangae's district's downtown area, injuring a 65-year-old woman. Somjian Uar-arun, 65, was preparing to open her grocery store when the 3-kilogram home-made bomb exploded. She was rushed from the scene to a local hospital suffering from shrapnel wounds. Two other bombs went off in nearby shops. No one was injured. More than 1,900 lives have been lost since the violence re-emerged in the three southernmost provinces in January 2004. Almost daily bombings, shootings and arson attacks have continued unabated in the region despite the Surayud's government attempts to promote peace and reconciliation. The Nation
