Ex-doctor killed, 2 critical

A former doctor was shot dead while a teacher and an assistant headman were critically wounded from drive-by shootings in the three southernmost provinces.
Teacher Arun Chanchit-chingchai, 54, took several rounds in his body while riding his motorcycle to work at Mai Kaen School in Songkhla's Chana district. He was taken to a local hospital. Four districts in Songkhla - especially Chana, Thepa and Saba Yoi - are frequently rocked by the violence that spills over from the border provinces. Teachers are often the target of the militants. More than 50 of them have been shot dead since the insurgency re-emerged in the deep South in 2003. At 7.30am in Pattani's Sai Buri district, former tambon doctor Pian Thong-in, 70, was shot dead riding his motorbike while doing errands. Two men on a motorbike approached him from behind and fired at his head before speeding away. On Monday night, assistant village headman Abdulromae Wanee was critically wounded in a drive-by shooting while walking home in Pattani's Muang district. More than 1,900 people have been killed since 2003.
