Man 'died in custody'

Friends and family of a Pang Mapha man allegedly beaten to death while in military custody remain unsatisfied following behind-closed-doors talks with officers yesterday.

They are demanding justice for 23-year-old Chanchai Phrom-thongchai.

The Army said Chanchai died after he and another man known as Som attempted to escape custody by jumping from a moving military vehicle. The other man was badly injured.

The dead man's brother-in-law Banjob Chatsri said family and friends believed Chanchai was beaten to death.

If a post-mortem revealed Chanchai had been assaulted, complaints would be made to police and the National Human Rights Commission.

The men were detained last Thursday after presenting fake ID cards at an Army checkpoint. Chanchai died on Sunday.
