Praise for anti-coup rally

A top military officer yesterday praised Sunday's anti-coup protesters for their behaviour and for not causing any trouble when the country needed peace and stability.

"The rally ended in no violence, which showed the people were smart," Army Region 1 commander Lt-General Prayuth Chan-ocha said.

"They know how to behave these days for the sake of the country's peace and stability," he said.

Some 1,000 people gathered at Sanam Luang late in the afternoon on Sunday before marching to Democracy Monument to mark Constitution Day and turned the event into a stage for ousting the ruling junta and its government.

The number of protesters grew to about 3,000 at the monument.

Fewer the protesters, more the benefit for the country, Prayuth said.

As the protesters urged the junta to finish the drafting of the new Constitution as soon as possible, Prayuth asked them not to cause trouble as it would delay the road to democracy.

He said the Constitution would be implemented within one year as promised.
