Fire forces Central Pinklao evacuation

Staff and shoppers were forced to evacuate the Central Pinklao department store yesterday after an electrical short circuit started a fire in a restaurant.

The fire broke out in the basement restaurant about 11.30am.

It sent smoke billowing from the third floor.

The department store was crowded with public-holiday shoppers.

Staff evacuated the department store before locking entrances and exits against looters.

Fire-fighters said an electrical short circuit caused a small fire and a lot of smoke. It took 20 minutes to put out.

Evacuated staff and shoppers brought traffic to a halt on Pinklao and Borom Ratchon-nanee roads.

There were no injuries. Losses have yet to be calculated.
