Anti-coup networkers 'will march'

The September 19 Network Against the Coup will stage what it hopes will be a mass rally this evening at Sanam Luang and then march to Democracy Monument to mark Constitution Day under a military regime.
The democracy activists called on the military's intelligence units and the press to make accurate reports about the group's political stance. Amid intimidation and rumours that tried to stop the demonstration on Constitu- tion Day, the network will push on with its plan to protest against the dictators who tore up the 1997 "People's Constitution", network representative Suwit Lertkraimethi said yesterday. The network denied any involvement with groups led by Chanapat na Nakorn, Thephanom Siriwittayarak or Thaikorn Polsuwan. Chanapat, or "Te-moo-jin", a leader of the People's Group for Democracy, on Friday said he would postpone his group's rally from today to January 6 at the request of "a highly-respected person". Chanapat said he could not divulge the name of the person. The network issued a statement urging the intelligence apparatus and media to make clear the network's independent movement and political stance. The network, including students, young activists and pro-democracy individuals, will hold political debates on the constitution-drafting process under military rule at the Democracy Monument on Rajdamnoen Avenue. Suwit, a political science student at Thammasat University, said his group was well prepared to prevent any violence from erupting, as could be seen by its incident-free demonstrations held over 10 times since the military junta took power.
