DSI to look into killings

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) is poised to intervene in a batch of four cases of alleged "silence killings" during the previous government's war on drugs in 2003, Justice Minister Chanchai Likhitjittha said yesterday.
"The DSI will on Thursday convene its board, chaired by Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont, to take over the four cases from the police," he said. The four cases are expected to pave the way for further intervention by the DSI to resolve 2,596 mysterious killings under the Thaksin regime, he added. Chanchai was replying to a query on silence killings raised from the floor by National Legislative Assembly member Praphan Koonmee. Chanchai said police currently had sole jurisdiction over the cases of silence killings, unless fresh evidence was uncovered to warrant the DSI's intervention. He urged families of victims to help supply pertinent information on the cases. Of the 2,596 cases, 1,164 are drug-related.
