A celebration of Thai art

Artworks by leading Thai artists in the reign of the King Rama IX are displayed in six rooms divided into six decades. The works are on display at the Queen’s Gallery till February 11.
An exhibition provides insights into how art has grown and prospered during the reign of King Rama IX

There is no better way to witness the transition of the art scene in Thailand during the last six decades than visiting "Art in the Reign of King Rama IX - Six Decades of Thai Art" exhibition currently on view at the Queen's Gallery in honour of the HM The King's golden jubilee.

The exhibition, offering a rare chance to see the works of 150 artists including HM The King's in one show, opens for the public from today until February 11, 2007.

The exhibition reveals how the art scene has prospered since the reign of King Rama IX, through works of past masters, and the new generation of artists.

HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn accompanied by HRH Princess Srirasmi presided over the exhibition yesterday and took a gallery tour.

Two hundred outstanding artworks from top Thai artists, including Khien Yimsiri, Fua Haripitak, Chalood Nimsamer, Chakrabhan Posayakrit, and Angkarn Kalayanapongsa, are displayed in six rooms.

Each room represents a decade - and each is divided into the six decades of the King's accession.

The exhibition is evidence that Thai art has extended from the court and temples to the public domain and the growing number of artists and galleries has made art more accessible to the public than ever before.

The organisers - the Queen's Gallery and Rama IX Art Museum Foundation - hope the artworks show how the King's continuous patronage and support in this field has helped art flourish in Thailand.

Each reign has its own distinctive artistic characteristics and the exhibition will also offer impressions of art during the era of King Rama IX.

Throughout the six decades, the King has been a great artist himself, lending his support to an abundance of artworks. He has been praised as the "Supreme Artist" thanks to his outstanding works.

In this exhibition, two of the King's artworks are on display - a photograph titled "4 Royal Hands" and a painting called "Red Hand".

Apart from the six exhibition rooms, the public can enjoy a huge and impressive virtual museum where visitors can not only view the paintings in the exhibition but also see additional artworks.

n The exhibition is open to the public every day except Wednesday from 10am-7pm. For more information, call 02-639-1539-40 and 02-281-5360-1. On the Net: www.rama9art.org.
