Energy policy gives Solartron rays of hope

Solartron has targeted revenue growth of 5 per cent next year - from Bt1.3 billion this year to Bt1.5 billion - to be driven by export market expansion and the Energy Ministry's policy to support the use of natural energy.
Jointly developing solar water pumps with Denmark's Grundfos will be the main force driving Solartron's earnings next year, CEO Wandee Khunchornyakong said yesterday. The company yesterday signed a contract with Grundfos (Thailand) to develop pumps. "Thailand is the country which needs water-pump systems to be efficient for water distribution," she said. "Solar water pumps will help increase efficiency in water distribution, in line with the government's policy. Both firms hope that solar water pumps will be used in 500 points in provincial areas next year, valued at Bt250 million," she said. Installing solar pumps will help develop water sources in remote areas, she said. On the government's solar home project, she said about 203,000 households had already installed solar cells and another 80,000 were lining up to install. "We are waiting for the new government's policy on whether it wants the project to continue. The problem we face in installing solar cells is that people don't understand how the process works," she said. Solartron posted a net profit of Bt11.96 million in the third quarter, down from Bt24.53 million in the same period last year.
