BMA gives Bo Bae time to negotiate

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will today negotiate with street vendors who have refused to remove their stalls from footpaths along the Padung Krung Kasem Canal.
The stalls have been in placefor many years, forming part of the well-known Bo Bae Market. "We will wait to see the results from the discussion," Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said yesterday. He said a committee headed by Deputy Bangkok Gover-nor Wallop Suwandee was scheduled to have a meeting with the street vendors' representatives to-day. Despite city orders, the street vendors have refused to vacate the area. One of their representatives, Surangrat Wattanawitornkul, yesterday said she planned to ask the BMA to give the registered street-stall owners a year or two to prepare for the relocation. "Be lenient with the stall owners who have a certificate of right issued by the Pom Prab District Office. There are more than 1,000 people in this group," Surangrat said. She said the BMA could consider taking action against stall owners who did not have the certificate. Apirak said it would be impossible for the BMA to give the stall owners a year to relocate. "It's too long," he said.
