Bomb in grocery bag kills 2 in Yala

A bomb hidden in a bag of vegetables exploded in a fresh market in Yala yesterday morning, killing two people and injuring 18 others in the latest violence in the three southernmost provinces.
Police said two young men - believed to be Muslim militants - placed a bag containing morning glory on a food vendor's stall in a market in Muang district before rushing off. The bomb went off shortly after the two left. Police said the bomb weighed about 5kg and was detonated by an alarm clock. The explosion killed Chaowaroj Kingratana, 50, and Paibul Meeseedee, 32, while critically injuring Police Lt-Colonel Sawad Sattayanont, 47, who was standing nearby. Explosions are not new to Yala. Several major bombings have occurred in the city centre in recent months, including a co-ordinated explosion at 22 commercial banks in August and at eight car and motorcycle showrooms in November. Separately, police raided a house in Yaring district of Pattani and found an AK-47 assault rifle and 26 rounds of ammunition. Police believe the weapon belonged to insurgents and are interrogating the house owner for further information. More than 1,800 people have been killed since the violence re-emerged in the Muslim-majority South in January 2004.
