South faces heavy rain from Durian

Typhoon Durian will bring heavy rain to Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat tomorrow and Thursday, the Meteorological Department has warned.

The department said the typhoon in the South China Sea has weakened to become a tropical storm and was centred 450 kilometres north-east of Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City with maximum wind speeds of about 110kmh.

It is moving west-south-west at about 15kmh.

The storm is expected to cause rainfall over the Vietnam coast by tonight, and will strengthen the high pressure area from China covering upper Thailand, bringing a cold mass of air into the area with a temperature drop of two to five degrees Celsius.

Rough to very rough seas are expected in the Gulf of Thailand and shipping should proceed with caution during December 4-7.
