Newcomer wins Laguna Phuket title

[TRIATHLON] Brazilian Reinaldo Colucci defeated a strong field of 750 triathletes, including defending champion Greg Bennett, to win the 13th Laguna Phuket Triathlon yesterday.

Colucci, who made his debut here, completed the 1.8km swim, 55km cycle and 12km run in an impressive time of 2:30.58 to top the professional men's category. He took home US$3,000 (Bt107,446).

"I'm very happy to have a chance to take part in his wonderful triathlon race. It is my first time competing here, and to my great surprise, I won it," Colucci said. Second place went to New Zealander Terenso Bozzone , while Italian Massimo Cigana finished third.

In the women's, Samantha MacGlone from Canada made it two in a row after crossing the finish line in 2:48.34. Ieanda Cave from Britain came  second, and American Laura Bennett finished third. In the team category, Thailand's Rajpracha Samasai Foundation captured top spot. The first Thai at the finish line was Chabarak Chaikamjorn, and. Natcha Pianprasopsuk came in first among the Thai women.
