Army considers cavalry troops to the south

The Army is considering mobilizing one or two more cavalry battalions from to assist the Fourth Army Area with the operation in the three southernmost provinces amid reports of militants intensifying their attacks.

The Army is concern that the militants will create a chaotic situation so villagers would rise up and take up arms against the state agencies in the form of mass protest, the source said Monday.

He pointed to the stocking up of rice and dry food among the villagers amid reports that more attacks are on the way, the source said.

About 14,000 troops are currently stationed in the restive region. A separate task force of about 1,000 soldiers from Special Warfare Unit are also in the region carrying out psychological operation aimed at winning hearts and mind of the local community, vast majority of whom are Muslims of Malay ethnicity.
