New Phuket resort has historic tin-mining theme

Phuket's newest luxury resort officially opened to guests on Friday. Indigo Pearl features "contemporary Asian design" inspired by the island's 100-year-old tin-mining industry.
Indigo Pearl is at Nai Yang Beach in the northwest of the island. It is near Sirinath National Park.According to owner and managing director Wichit na Ranong, the resort "aims to restore the historic balance and attract discerning travellers seeking a distinctive cultural experience. "It realises a vision to pay tribute to the history of tin-mining in Phuket," he added. To get things started, Indigo Pearl is offering guests an introductory rate of US$188 (Bt6,724) a night. They get accommodation in one of the resort's deluxe rooms, a buffet breakfast and return airport transfers. The offer lasts until December 21. "It is great to have Indigo Pearl open after months of planning and preparation. We've had a fantastic response so far with the resort already full over Christmas and many guests now booked for 2007," said general manager Anthony Ross. The $21-million resort is described as a "fusion of modern architecture and Thai tradition". It was designed by architect and interior- and landscape-designer Bill Bensley. "Everything down to the finest detail fits in with the theme of tin-mining, extending through every facet of the resort, from the names of the restaurants and bars to the staff uniforms," Bensley said. There are 277 rooms and suites set in lagoons and jungle and eight restaurants and bars. Guests can choose from several activities, including a cooking school and a "meditation pavilion". The resort said it wanted to target the meetings and incentive market and had conference facilities for 900 delegates.
