Thais hits gold mine

[FESPIC GAMES] Thai disabled athletes performed way beyond expectations as the gold-medal count soared past the initially targeted 50 in the Fespic Games in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The swimming team ended their campaign by scooping nine golds, athletics contributed three gold medals, two more came from badminton and one from table tennis for a grand total of 54.

The team were expected to produce about 50 golds when they left Bangkok. At the 2002 Games in Busan, South Korea, they brought home only 43 gold medals.

The swimming team alone scooped 30 golds. Swimmers Aphiwat Anghiran and Voravit Kaekham turned out to be the Games' most successful athletes by reeling off five gold medals each.

Apiwat claimed his fifth yesterday by winning the 4x100m medley relay in the Max 49 visually impaired category, while Vorawit picked up his fourth in the S5 functional 50m butterfly and fifth in the 4x50m medley relay in the Max 20 P functional.

China extended their lead in the overall medal standings with 165 gold medals, 62 silvers and 31 bronzes.

Thailand are a distant second with 54 golds, 38 silvers and 43 bronzes, followed by South Korea with 38 golds, 32 silvers and 34 bronzes.
