Onet to become more important

Scores from the Ordinary National Educational Test (Onet) will become a main part of Grade-12 students' grade point average (GPA) from 2008 onward, Education Minister Wijit Srisa-arn suggested yesterday.
"This means a student's chance to complete their senior secondary education also depends on their performances in the Onet," Wijit said. He was speaking after a meet?ing with top executives from the Office of Basic Education Commission (Obec) and National Institute for Education Testing Service (NIETS). According to Wijit, Onet scores should account for between 40 and 50 per cent of the GPA. Obec and NIETS have been assigned to look into the details of the proposal. NIETS has held the Onet to assess not only students' academ?ic performances but also schools' educational quality. However, some Grade-12 students do not take the Onet seriously because they do not plan to further their education. Onet scores are a key criterion for university admission. "When the Onet can determine whether a student can graduate from their schools, they will take the Onet seriously," Wijit said. He expected this idea to take effect in 2008.
