Police revamp 'aims to stop political influence'

The government commission studying the decentralisation of the Royal Thai Police yesterday set up four working panels.

Convening for the first time to work out the controversial restructuring plan, the commission agreed in principle that the Royal Thai Police should be allowed to continue functioning as the central command, said retired police general Wasit Dejkunchorn yesterday.

The four panels will each work on restructuring of command structure and administrative management; development of personnel resources and career training; development of legal practicality and laws; and on public participation and press relations. Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont chaired the commission in a closed-door session with national police chief General Kowit Vatana.

He said later the restructuring was aimed at keeping out political influence in the police force.

Kowit later said the restructuring was welcome if the final outcome indicated the government's and the public's approval of the police and their performance.
