Late News :CP to boost EU chicken exports

Charoen Pokphand Foods said it planned to boost its exports to the EU, after Thailand gained its biggest quota allocation.

President and CEO Adirek Sripratak yesterday called it a great export opportunity, particularly for processed chicken products. The company's exports to the EU currently accounts for 40-50 per cent of its total exports.

"Both the high export quota and a lower-than-expected import tariff will enable Thai manufacturers to seize a greater market share," he said.

He added that Thailand would fulfil the EU's processed chicken quota of 160,033 tonnes within the next few years. In addition, Thailand's total export of these products will reach 200,000 tonnes per year soon.

Style guide for Lanna crafts

The Craft Design Service Centre (CDSC) project of Chiang Mai University's Faculty of Fine Arts has produced the "Lanna-Style Book" as a guide for entrepreneurs and product manufacturers to use in designing their craft products.

The CDSC, which enjoys support from both the public and private sectors, plans to increase the potential for Lanna-style craft products in the world market.

Those interested in the book and CD-ROM may contact the CDSC at Chiang Mai University.

I'nesia denies US claims

The Indonesian government has denied dumping allegations by the US government about exports of coated free-sheet paper, says a Xinhua News Agency report.

Martua Sihombing, director of trade surveillance at the Trade Ministry, called the dumping charges levied by the US Commerce Department groundless.

By using raw materials sourced from fast-growing tree species, Indonesian paper products, including coated free-sheet paper, are cheaper than those produced by other countries, he said, as quoted by The Jakarta Post English-language daily.

He said the government, together with the paper industry, had enough evidence to counter the dumping charges.

"We are cooperating with the Forestry Ministry and the Directorate-General of Taxes to collate all the available evidence," he said.

The US Commerce Department last Tuesday announced its decision to initiate an anti-dumping and countervailing-duty investigation into imports of coated free-sheet paper from Indonesia.

"This is the second allegation from the US against Indonesian paper products," said Martua.
