Suparut exits PTT board amid criticism

Finance Ministry permanent secretary Suparut Kawatkul resigned from PTT's board of directors, effective from November 16, the company said yesterday in a filing with the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

A source said criticism that he was a board member of too many companies was the reason for his resignation.

However, he will not quit his directorships in other listed companies, the source added.

Suparut also sits on the boards of Krung Thai Bank and Thai Airways International. The Securities and Exchange Commission said he earned Bt6.5 million per year as a director of the three listed companies. He also serves as a director of another 16 organisations, including Thai Asset Management.

A recent report by Auditor-General Jaruvan Maintaka criticised government executives who sit on more than three state-enterprise boards and called for the government to address this conflict-of-interest issue.

Suparut became the second PTT director to quit, after Praphan Naikowit, a deputy attorney-general, resigned to become an election commissioner. Former Justice Ministry permanent secretary Somchai Wongsawat is also expected to quit the PTT board soon.

PTT's board consists of 15 members.
