Work on charter 'to start in Jan'

The country's military leaders yesterday confirmed that selection of a 2,000-member National People's Assembly (NPA) was on track and work on a new constitution would begin in January as planned.
"The 2,000-member NPA should be able to name candidates responsible for the new constitution by next month and drafting can start early the following month," Council for National Security (CNS) deputy chairman Air Chief Marshal Chalit Pukphasuk said yesterday. Chalit will screen the 2,000 NPA members, who will in turn name 200 candidates from a peer vote to become candidates for a Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA). The CNS will select the final 100 charter drafters. To date 1,768 NPA members have been named from various sections of the community. The CNS and its Cabinet will nominate the other 232 members, Chalit said. Should any of the nominated members not be properly qualified the CNS and Cabinet will fill the vacancies. Checking of nominees' qualifications is to be completed by tomorrow and NPA selection should be finalised by Thursday, Chalit said.
