Cold in the North; wet in Central, South

The Central and southern regions can expect scattered thundershowers and isolated heavy rain from the middle of next week.
These conditions are expected in the lower South from Surat Thani on November 29 and 30. A moderate northeasterly monsoon is prevailing over the Gulf of Thailand and the South, according to the Meteorological Department. The North is suffering from low temperatures. Frost was reported on the summit of Doi Angkhang in Fang district. Somchai Kiewdaeng, president of the Royal Agricultural Station there, said air temperatures had fallen to 4 degrees Celsius from midnight on November 22 until 2am on November 23. Ground temperatures were 1.5 C, bringing the first frost of the year. "Frost will continue until Sunday, the third consecutive day, thanks to low morning temperatures," Somchai said. Chiang Mai yesterday received a donation of 1,000 blankets, but as many as 280,000 people in the province remain in need. Northern Meteorological Department official Worapoj Kunaviwatnangkoon said a high-pressure area had covered the region on November 22, bringing the low temperatures and frost. The high-pressure area will weaken, forcing temperatures up 1-2 degrees today. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Aree Wongsearaya said authorities were working to resolve flooding. "There is still flooding in 11 provinces in the West, including Phichit, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani and Nakhon Pathom. The authorities are releasing floodwaters as sea levels allow," he said.
