Aid for students

The Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) plans to provide free lunches, textbooks and uniforms to students affected by flooding.

"Our assistance will focus particularly on students from families whose farms have been completely damaged by flooding," Obec secretary-general Khunying Kasama Varawarn said yesterday.

Obec has found that 232,436 students, 12,918 teachers and 1,443 schools have been affected by nationwide flooding since late August.

"The number of flood victims could be higher," Kasama said.

Forty-three schools are still closed due to flooding.

"Some schools look set to remain closed until the end of December because the floodwater has not subsided at all. These schools have to be closed out of concern for students' safety. They will be at risk if they have to travel in heavily-flooded areas," Kasama said.

Most of these schools are in Nonthaburi and Nakhon Pathom provinces. They will later hold classes on weekends for their students to catch up with the required syllabus for their academic year, she said.
