TOT names new president

The TOT yesterday selected its senior executive vice president Somkual Bruminhent as president.
The board gave Somkual the highest score during the final selection round when the three final candidates presented their visions to directors for 20 minutes each. The other candidates were Wichien Naksrinual, who is also a senior executive vice president, and chief financial officer Chatri Sahavejjabhand. Somkual's official appointment is pending the approval of the Finance Ministry. TOT has operated without a president since May, when the old board removed Teerawit Charuwat from the post, citing his failure to achieve business goals. Somkual, 59, has been working with TOT for 38 years. This was the fourth time he had vied for the top post. "Finally, I got it," he said. Somkual won the highest score in one of the previous selection processes, which was later cancelled by the old board. He later sued the board for terminating the result. "I will withdraw the case from court," he said. He said his vision was to modernise TOT and make it become the country's best employer. TOT is experiencing a long list of problems, ranging from falling revenue to the attempt by private cellular operators that hold CAT Telecom Plc concessions to convert TOT's access charge into the interconnection charge of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). Recently DTAC, which holds CAT's concession, asked TOT to convert the access charge into the interconnection charge. The access charge is the cost all three private cellular concessionaires of CAT have paid to TOT for connecting different networks via TOT's network.
