Leaflet propaganda

Security officials will use helicopters to distribute explanatory leaflets in Yala province in a bid to build more understanding with local villagers, a senior Southern Border Provinces Peace Building Command officer said yesterday.

About 2,000 leaflets would be dropped in Bannang Sata, Yaha and Than To districts, Maj-General Chamlong Kunsong said.

The move is aimed at restoring confidence in the government among villagers after stepped up efforts by insurgents to fake shootings and crimes by the authorities.

Once the villagers believe the insurgents, they then mastermind more violence and incite them to protest and demand the removal of security officials from their areas.

The leaflets will be in Thai and Malay and will explain the campaign to end the violence. It will ask the villagers to show restraint over the militants' propaganda efforts. They will also be asked to keep a close watch on strangers in their villages.
