Universities want breaks

The University Presidents Council is developing proposals it wants the government to consider as it moves towards making state universities autonomous organisations.

One of the proposals sought adequate subsidies for newly-autonomous universities, council chairman Pratya Vesarach said yesterday.

University salary structures were an integral part of the proposals, too. Many staff would retain their civil-servant status after the change and still others would have their salaries and benefits based on civil-servant pay scales.

"Autonomous universities should enjoy tax benefits similar to government agencies. They should have the status of a department," Pratya said.

The council's submissions called for tax benefits including exemptions from corporate income tax, property tax, land tax and many other types of tax and duty.

Pratya said the council would pass the proposals to state university chiefs and seek their recommendations.

"If there are none the council will submit the proposals to Education Minister Wijit Srisaan," Pratya added.
