LPG export tax to be raised

The Energy Policy Committee yesterday authorised the Energy Planning and Policy Office (EPPO) to raise its fund collection from exporters of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) to bring the price of Thai LPG in line with global markets.

EPPO director-general Metta Banterngsuk said the measure was needed to increase the amount of LPG available to the domestic market, as the present quota system could not protect supply.

Domestic demand for LPG rose 53 per cent in the first nine months of the year. Thailand produces 335,000 tonnes of LPG per month, 30,000 of which is for export.

"Since exporters and distributors of LPG in Thailand are the same companies, we believe that increased fund collection would have no significant impact on them. The fund collection is a temporary measure to prevent a domestic shortage of LPG and will be applied until the sharp increase in local demand for LPG declines," said Metta.
