No meet with Thai refugees

A group of Thai officials were denied a meeting with the 130 Thais who fled to Malaysia by the group's leader, an informed source said.

"Even though we received assurances from Malaysian officials we were not allowed to meet the Thais because of their leader's refusal," said a member of the Thai delegation who asked not to be named.

It was not clear why the leader objected to the request, but one informed source suspected there was no consensus over the decision to return to Thailand.

Relatives who have visited the 130 displaced villagers in the past were murdered after their return to Thailand for reasons unknown, according to the same informed source quoting a letter from one of the displaced people.

In October last year, 131 Thais from the Muslim-majority South fled to Malaysia in fear for their safety from the ongoing violence. One has since returned.
