UN supports 'just' policy in region

Ibrahim Gambari, the UN's under-secretary-general for political affairs, has praised Thailand's policy of reconciliation in dealing with the violence in the deep South, Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram said yesterday.
Nitya told reporters Gambari believed that a policy of putting justice at the top of the agenda would help quell unrest in the strife-torn region. "We told him that the situation should improve because we are restoring faith in the justice system," Nitya said. The previous government of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was heavily criticised for its harsh policies to quell problems in the South. About 1,800 people have been killed in the area since January 2004. Gambari was here following a series of meetings in Burma. He met with NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi for an hour on Saturday before wrapping up a four-day mission to press leaders of Burma's military junta to release political prisoners and undertake democratic reforms.
