Promises from premier

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont handed out relief bags to flood-affected residents in Nakhon Pathom and Suphan Buri yesterday.

Surayud told locals of Tambon Bua Pak Tha in Nakhon Pathom's Bang Len district that the government was well aware of their troubles and was trying to solve the problems. However, since the flooding is so widespread it will take time for conditions to return to normal.

Surayud also urged residents to be patient as floodwaters will recede much further in 10 days.

He said assistance and compensation were being dealt with by a committee that will collect all the relevant information within 30 days - and solve the problems with two months. He added that the issue of farmer's compensation should become clearer in 10-20 days.

Surayud confirmed the government would work with transparency, honesty and justice and there would be no embezzlement of relief items. He urged people to tip off the authorities if they witness any official misconduct or corruption.
