Ex-EC heads win case

The Nakhon Si Thammarat provincial court yesterday acquitted four controversial former election commissioners of malfeasance in their supervision of a municipal election in 2004.
The four defendants were Vasana Puemlarp, Prinya Nakchudtree, Virachai Naewboonnien and Charupat Ruangsuwan. They were charged by Prayad Semapat of abusing power in ousting him as mayor of Tambon Pak Nakhon in 2005 by voiding his 2004 election victory. The court battle was seen as one of myriad lawsuits designed to purge the Election Commission of members who clung to office to perpetuate the Thaksin Shinawatra regime. The four accused had resigned by July following the criminal conviction of three of them for dereliction of duty in botching the April 2 national election.
