National player Montinee Tangphong won her second round match in the US$25,000 (Bt950,000) Koni Cup in Jakarta yesterday. It was her second quarter-final appearance in a Challenger tournament this year.
Montinee, seeded sixth, booked the spot when her Japanese rival Keiko Taguchi retired with an injury at 6-2 3-1. She will play Indonesian fourth-seeded Sandy Gumulya, a 6-4 6-0 winner over Tomoko Sugano of Japan, in today's match.
Montinee's last quarter-final appearance came in a Challenger in Beijing in May. Her best result this year, however, was a semi-final spot in a $10,000 ITF event in Hiroshima two months ago.
In Pune, India, teenager Nungnadda Wannasuk stormed into the semi-final of the $10,000 NECC-ITF Women's Tennis at Deccan Gymkhana Tennis Centre following a 6-1 6-1 win over Indian Sanaa Bhambri. She will next play left-handed Isha Lakhani, the top seed, who beat countrywoman Tara Iyer 4-6 6-2 6-1.
In Busan, three Thais marched into the doubles semi-final in the $75,000 Flea Market Cup Busan Challenger.
Danai, teaming up with South Korean Lee Hyung-taik ousted Jun Woong-sun of South Korea and Denis Matsukevitch of Russia 7-5 6-3. Second-seeded Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana toppled South Korean Im Kyu-tae and Taiwanese Lu Yen-hsun 6-2 6-1.
