Before his body was cremated yesterday, mourners at the funeral of taxi driver Nuamthong Phraiwan were played a recording of him complaining about the September 19 military coup over loudspeakers.
In his message, the taxi driver described the erstwhile Council for Democratic Reform (CDR), which staged the coup, as "badmouthing and bullsh***ing", referring to promises not to stage a coup made earlier by some CDR members. Nuamthong accused Colonel Akkhara Thiproj, who served as a deputy spokesman for the CDR, of looking down on democracy lovers, saying: "Soldiers do not know about democracy because they are regularly abused by their superiors in their profession." He was reacting to Akkhara's statement that he did not believe anybody could love democracy enough to risk their own life after Nuamthong rammed his taxi into a tank at the Royal Plaza a few days after the military takeover. Nuamthong hanged himself from a pedestrian walkway in the early hours of November 1 to protest against the coup. Army secretary Maj-General Weeran Chanthasartkosol attended the funeral service at Wat Bua Khwan in Nonthaburi province . Nuamthong's daughter Sawida, a recent university graduate, said she welcomed the Army's offer of a job in the service.
