NCCC to probe ex-ministers

The National Counter Corruption Commission yesterday decided to form six fact-finding panels to deal with six graft cases involving former Cabinet members from several governments.
"The six panels will recommend whether to launch prosecutions or drop the charges," NCCC member Klanarong Chantik said. The six corruption cases include the auction of a seized plot by Thanyaburi Provincial Court during the first Democrat-led government between 1992 and 1995. Former justice minister Suthas Ngern-muen and three senior officials are being investigated for their decision to waive a Bt70-million fee for the transaction. From the same period, former deputy commerce minister Jurin Laksanavisit is being investigated for corruption in a price intervention scheme for rubber. Former education minister Somsak Prissananthakul is suspected of becoming suddenly rich during the Banharn government. Also targeted is ex-deputy commerce minister Pinya Chuay-plod over a coffee-price intervention scheme in 1990. Former deputy prime minister Wan Muhamad Noor Matha suspected of doctoring a financial statement during the Chavalit Yongchaiyudh government. In the final case, former deputy prime minister Wissanu Kreangam is accused of issuing an improper order relating to the appointment of senior monks.
