Kosit outlines idea of sufficiency economy

Deputy Prime Minister and Industry Minister Kosit Panpiemras said the interim government would ensure the public participation and social harmony in its economic policy to avoid the mistake done by the previous government.
He also outlined four priorities that the interim government strives to achieve during the one-year period.
Here's the summary of Kosit's speech given at the Open House seminar today.
"This is an interim government, as you all know. More important mission is to see to it that the interim government would have the tenure of one year. Then, Thailand will have an election. And the more important point of that mission is that the government will be operated for one year.
A lot of people asked, "What can the interim government do in short period of one year? I try to give you my thoughts on what the government will do within this one-year timeframe. Of course, we cannot do everything so there's need to prioritise the areas of priority as follow:
First, the government inherited a lot of issues form previous government. There're a number of issues that Minister Sithichai was telling you that the government has inherited. Many of them are urgent so the most important task of this government is to try our best to come out the best answers of these issues. All of our ministries are now being at work. And I complement that most of the issues will be clarified probably by Jan which is the month in which the budget is expected to be passed.
Why January? Because many of resolutions would require some budget reallocation, so we still have time. Many of these policy issues will be done in prudent manner and to at least make sure that whatever we make, the decisions will not cause problems afterwards.
Secondly, we need to try to redirect our development policy. Why? Because in the past few years, we all have witnessed that a large section of Thai citizens have questioned the way in which our development policy has been carried out. Dissatisfaction arising out of certain type of development policy has been so strong and eventually has led to some very severe. Circumstances that disrupted all the activities. We had one election that the general society did not want to accept.
We try to rethink our development policy. What we are now proposing to the general public is that we would like to redirect our development policy.
My idea of sufficiency economy which means that we would like to add quality in to the development process. In short, the application of sufficiency economy can mean different things to different people to different sectors of the economy.
It's the same objective that makes development more sustainable and add the better stronger risk management and add more importance to things like governance and quality of life, those kind of things will be introduced.
Third priority is that we work on problems inherited from the previous government, we of course are aware that the globalisation certainly move on. What we would like to say now is to promote relationship with foreign countries, our investment promotion policy would remain intact. But of course, we are aware that throughout the process of globalisation, somebody may gain but also many may not be able to adjust. Having this in mind, we are moving to adjust ourselves, recognising that we may have to deal with those who cannot quickly adjust. By allowing time to adjust and giving them assistance according to our sufficiency economy so that we will emerge stronger to strengthen themselves so they can become an equal player in the new globalisation world.
So yes, the government sees to it that we have to keep adjusting ourselves to promote productivity, which is an important thing to us. The previous government said that the biggest, the most important adjective in development is to arrive at highest possible growth rate but not this one. This one will promote sufficiency economy, which would be more balanced economy.
Globalisation is yes for us, something that we have to face, we have to look forward to work closely with our foreign friends. Everybody is welcome. The name of the game is that in the end all parties should emerge stronger win-win situation.
Fourth, we have to devote ourselves in dealing with the problem in the South. We have made some progress and to my knowledge, we will continue that particular issue, emphasise the need to improve justice system. Everything is much clearer. The way the government dealing with policy we think that the best way of government running public policy is to take time, listening to all those stakeholders. Participation is the name of the game, society harmony will not be achieved without public participation."
