Lifting ban on political

The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) will today debate a draft bill for lifting the ban on political meetings, in a bid to ease restrictions enforced by martial law.

"The draft might be passed by three consecutive readings within one day," said Speaker Meechai Ruchuphan.

The provisions of the draft have been designed to cancel Announcement No 7 issued by the Council for Democratic Reform.

The prohibition of political congregations came into effect in connection with the September 19 military coup, hence having the legal status of an act of Parliament. Its cancellation can only be done by legislation.
