NLA debate lifting ban on political meetings Thursday

The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) will debate Thursday the draft bill for lifting the ban on political meetings in a bid to ease restrictions enforced by martial law.

"The draft might be passed by three consecutive readings within one day," NLA Speaker Meechai Ruchuphan said.

The draft is sponsored by the interim government.

Its provisions have been designed to cancel the Announcement No 7 issued by the Council for Democratic Reform.

The prohibition of political congregations came into effect in connection with the September 19 military coup, hence having the legal status equivalent to an act of Parliament. Its cancellation must be done by legislation.
