Brass to join THAI board

Transport Minister Teera Haocharoen is likely to invite military officers to replace four members of the board of directors of Thai Airways International who resigned on Monday.
The minister will give authority to permanent secretary Chaisawat Kitikronpaiboon to name the new directors today at a board meeting at the headquarters of THAI.A source at THAI said that the minister was likely to pick military men rather than politicians to fill the vacant posts. The expectation is based on moves in which soldiers are snatching management-level jobs at partly privatised state enterprises. However, Teera has not disclosed the names of the new directors. The source said the rest of the THAI board might nominate candidates to the minister, but he had no details. On Monday, THAI held a board meeting chaired by Wanchai Sarathulthat. It appointed Chaisak Saeng-xuto to the board to replace Air Chief Marshal Chalit Pukbhasuk, who resigned on October 17. Wanchai and four other members of the board resigned their THAI positions. The other four are Somchainuk Engtrakul, chairman of TMB Bank; Pachara Yuthidhamma-damrong, who is attorney-general; Vikrom Koompirochana, Thailand's ambassador to Great Britain; and Tirachai Vutithum, president of the Soccer Players' Foundation of Thailand. The resignations took effect on Tuesday. The same source also said that THAI's labour union was happy with this week's developments.
