Rice bidding to open soon

Commerce Minister Krirkkrai Jirapaet will today make an announcement about the opening of bids soon for 2.63 million tonnes of rice from the government stockpiles, in order to clear out its warehouse for the upcoming round of rice pledging.
The government will retain about 1.1 million tonnes of rice from past seasons in its stocks. However, the source from the ministry said the bidding system may be changed in order to make it more transparent.
Southern SEZ Three leading business associations have urged the government to create a special economic zone in the three restive southern provinces, which should also cover Satun and Songkhla, said Thai Chamber of Commerce chairman Pramon Suthivongse. Pramon reported the suggestion after yesterday's meeting between Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont and the Thai Bankers' Association, the Board of Trade, and the Federation of Thai Industries.
Reshuffle nod The Cabinet yesterday approved reshuffles at several ministries. At the Transport Ministry, Land Transport Department director-general Piyapan Champasut has been made a deputy permanent secretary, while Silapachai Charukasemwatana, a ministerial inspector, takes over the position he vacates. At the Energy Ministry, Metta Banterngsook, director-general of the Energy Policy and Planning Office, will become director-general of the Energy Business Department, while former Energy Business Department director-general Panich Pongpirodom will lead the Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency Department. Government Housing Bank president Khan Prachuabmoh's term has been extended.
