STREET WISE
Can he sneak back in unseen?

With seven weeks having passed since the military seized power, the big news lately has been ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's attempt to return to the country

It was known that Thaksin flew to China last week.

Then the press shot questions at high-level figures in the Council for National Security (CNS) and the government, precisely about the possible return of Thaksin. One question was whether Thaksin could have travelled from China to Chiang Mai, and then to Bangkok.

Certainly, Thaksin must be all ears updating himself on the possible options. And a crafty man like him must also be concocting plans on how to return home.

So what options does he have if he is to return to Bangkok without being seen by the military or the government?

Forget the airways, for it is clear that any plane with him on board would not be allowed to land in the Kingdom.

How about by sea? That looks more possible. Being the chief of one of Thailand's richest families, he must have rich friends who happen to own luxury yachts. And now that Phuket is an open destination for international boats, it wouldn't be a surprise if one were to carry Thaksin on board.

The other possible means of entry is across the country's land borders.

Streetwise has heard that Cambodian soldiers along the northeast border are on the alert about what is happening on the other side.

They asked a reporter there about the political situation and why a number of soldiers had been mobilised on the Thai side. This lookout for Thaksin might be an exaggeration, as it would be much easier for him to sneak in through the northern border. The recent military mobilisation might be aimed at reported "undercurrent" movements.

Yet another option is to dig a tunnel and then appear in any part of Thailand.

Still, Thaksin knows that whatever way he tries, coming home doesn't look safe without official permission. He's only got himself to blame: his unique face is too hard to forget and any police officer would know him instantly at first sight.
